LA Shares is a non-profit materials reuse program which takes donations of reusable goods and materials (both new and used) and redistributes these items free of charge to non-profits and schools throughout Los Angeles County. This is accomplished by using their interactive website where interested schools and non-profits create an online profile of their organization, including a “Wish List” and “Top 20 List” of needed items. This profile is then entered into their unique, relational database, which proactively identifies each organization’s needs and continuously seeks to match those needs with the donated items on record. When a need is matched, the recipient is notified, via e-mail, to come to one of our two area warehouses to retrieve their items or instructed to go directly to the donor for pick-up. Either way, this state-of-the-art system is designed to help schools and non-profits obtain needed items quickly.

Music in Schools Today (MUST) serves public school grades K-12 in the San Francisco Bay Area. Despite extensive research indicating that music instruction supplies intellectual, emotional and physical components critical to children’s development, music and arts programs are often the first victims of budget cuts. MUST combats this trend with a comprehensive set of programs that are resistant to budget slashing. MUST serves over 21,000 children and youth annually in schools and community centers, conducts research and development and advocates to restore music as an essential principle of education.

The Roots of Music Program fills a void in music education programs in the New Orleans educational institutions. Marching bands were always an integral part of the New Orleans middle schools before Katrina drastically changed that. Now many schools don’t even offer music programs anymore. Today the program serves over 100 students, making up a full marching band that is successfully parading the city since Mardi Gras 2009. The program provides music education in history, theory, instrumental instruction and ensemble performance. Furthermore, academic tutoring is offered to ensure the students maintain at least a 2.5 GPA in school.
