Bikes Not Bombs uses the bicycle as a vehicle for social change. They reclaim thousands of bicycles each year and ship most of  them overseas to economic development projects through their international programs in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. Bikes that don’t get shipped often land in their youth programs where teens learn bicycle safety and mechanics skills in the process of earning bikes to keep for themselves. Their retail bike shop also reconditions and sells some of the donated bikes that they receive, employing many graduates of their programs. The Shop’s profit from the bicycle sales, parts sales and repairs goes towards funding their youth and international work.

LA Shares is a non-profit materials reuse program which takes donations of reusable goods and materials (both new and used) and redistributes these items free of charge to non-profits and schools throughout Los Angeles County. This is accomplished by using their interactive website where interested schools and non-profits create an online profile of their organization, including a “Wish List” and “Top 20 List” of needed items. This profile is then entered into their unique, relational database, which proactively identifies each organization’s needs and continuously seeks to match those needs with the donated items on record. When a need is matched, the recipient is notified, via e-mail, to come to one of our two area warehouses to retrieve their items or instructed to go directly to the donor for pick-up. Either way, this state-of-the-art system is designed to help schools and non-profits obtain needed items quickly.
